about

This spring/summer was tough. Like a lot of musicians I had a hard time processing the idea that I wouldn't be playing again for a LONG time. I don't think I'd gone two weeks without playing a gig since high school so the idea of not playing for months on end was difficult. Coupled with being on lockdown and trying to present a sense of normalcy for two small children, things were challenging. I experienced a recurrence of symptoms from the concussion I had last year, mostly headaches and anxiety that in hindsight was probably just good old-fashioned depression. When the kids went to sleep for the night I'd go down to the basement, pick up an instrument and be at a total loss for what to play. I'd been in such a pattern or just preparing for the next gig for so long that it was really hard to play anything. I got in the habit of just picking up a guitar, strumming a single chord and letting it ring. And I found that certain chords would ease the pressure in my head just a tiny bit. And then I'd find another chord and a couple of notes that would ease it a little bit more so I'd try to connect them. Sometimes I'd just play a few bars over and over for hours and find that by the end of the night my head felt pretty normal again. I've never really thought about music therapy very much, but I can say that this really helped sort out my brain.

I started making little demos of these ideas and eventually was able to flush some of them out into actual songs. Over the last several months I've been working on properly recording them. This is the only one that doesn't have lyrics. I don't like recording vocals with the mics I have here so it's the first one to be finished recording. If you've got three and a half minutes give it a listen! Perhaps if you're experiencing a Covid related rising sense of anxiety and a crushing pain in your skull it might help you too.
