about

Last fall I was very happy to get an invite from Dave Grenon to contribute something to an event called Vigil that Trent Radio was doing to mark the winter solstice. From the FB event description:

"Vigil: an act of staying awake, especially at night, in order to be with a person who is very ill or dying, or to make a protest, or to pray.No dream fulfilled.
No dream abandoned.
No spirit disappears.
From embers, new fires.Join us.
Sunset to sunrise on the longest night of the year.
Seeking submissions of live noise/drones/improvisations/speech acts/songs/failures/follies/etc."

Coming near the end of 2020, those were all concepts I thought I could sink my teeth into. My kids were in school, I had no gigs and this invite arrived at a really perfect time for me to focus my energies on something (somewhat) productive. I was a little nervous that whatever I came up with was going to be too "musical" to fit into the noise/drone aspect. But it really forced me to approach making music in a different way.  Most of this track is electric guitar improvisations, but I spent a good number of hours editing, re-contextualizing and re-programming it. This is also my first foray into drum programming.

It's not exactly a banger. It's about eleven minutes long, it's kind of ambient and takes a while to develop. I thought about trying to make some kind of video for this track, but decided against it. If anybody gets anything out of this music it won't be by staring at and listening to it on a phone. If you feel so inclined to give it your time I would recommend a decent set of headphones, or if you're home alone a good loud stereo. Maybe some pillows, you might want to get horizontal.
